Be kind to yourself

Have you found you being angry or disappointed in yourself just because you didn’t finish what you wanted to finish today or just because you are stuck somewhere and not able to sort out the issue at hand?

That is when we should follow Ahimsa and be kind to ourselves.

Ahimsa is first Yama (Social ethic) of the Eight limbs of Yoga. Ahimsa’s literal meaning is non-violence, but that just doesn’t stop at hurting yourself, other or to environment.

It also means being kind to ourselves and to everyone and everything else. Having self-care routine is also one type of Ahimsa, by which we are really looking after ourselves and so that we can look after others while feeling good and happy in our own body.

While I am talking about Ahimsa, I remember Mahatma Gandhi’s quote –

The Principal of Ahimsa is hurt by every evil thought, by undue haste, by lying, by hatred, by wishing ill to anybody.

Mahatma Gandhi

This quote covers Ahimsa so beautifully. When we have evil thoughts about ourselves, others or nature around us, we are being violent to our own thoughts and that affects our mental well-being and that reflects in our actions. Same way if you lie about something to hurt others feelings, that is also violence and you are really affecting your own health.

So let’s try together to bring Ahimsa in our daily practice and that begins with we being kind to ourselves first.

I am teaching this principal to my little students in kids yoga classes throughout this term and I will ask you to practice the same and please write in comment how you followed Ahimsa in your life today or any other day.

Mindful movements is a great way to slow down, connect with your body, and calm your mind. This juicy practice is ideal for anyone new to yoga, but everyone will enjoy this opportunity to move your body, breathe deeply and simply feel good.

Move through a series of stretches, yoga poses and guided breathing to increase flexibility and mobility, decompress, and create more physical space in the body. This yoga class is a great way to get familiarised with the poses (and a back-to-the-basics refresher for more experienced students).

Should yoga be personalised?

Teaching private yogaAre you and the person seating next to you same? Do you have same body, same lifestyle, same diet? The answer is no,  isn’t it?

Then why your yoga practice should be generalised for a group of students? You should have your personal yoga practice just designed for you according to your body, according to your lifestyle,  the problems you are facing or just based on how you feel in your body.

Group classes

When you go in a group yoga class, I definitely see advantage of having community around you. But are you really looking to talk with people while you practicing or you want to connect with your inner self?

In the group class, a teacher is forced to design generalised practice which can work for everyone,  but it is really not possible to get 100% advantage of your practice if it is not designed for YOU.

Ancient times

In history of yoga, yoga was always taught to individual according to their needs. It was never in group settings,  always taught 1:1 at the teacher’s home or school.

When yoga came to west and because westerners were used to group settings, they tried to general yoga and started teaching yoga in group settings. If you go and ask any of your teachers who learned from Krishnamacharya or Desikachar, they will be able to tell you importance of personalised yoga.

Advantages of private yoga

Now let’s look at the advantage of having private yoga practice –

  • Gaining the initial experience in comfort of your own home.
  • Creating a personalised schedule which works around your life – no hassle or wasting time in travelling to a studio or gym.
  • Focusing on personal goal, so you can see the growth earlier.
  • Overcoming health concerns – when you are facing some specific health issues, yoga teacher can designed the practice for you, work along with your medical professional to provide you with optimal health.
  • Developing a plan for your personal home yoga practice – as you gain experience through private yoga lessons, you can work with your yoga teacher to design your personal practice which you can do on your own.
  • Working on in-depth practice – private yoga can be really helpful when you want to take your practice to next level and help you to advance your practice in the direction you want to.
